Koror, Palau – The Palau Sport Fishing Association, in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries, hosted a Youth Offshore Fishing Competition on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

Many of the participants are already avid young anglers, skilled in casting lines from the shores of their home states. But this weekend offered something entirely different: their first chance to venture offshore aboard two vessels generously provided by NECO Marine. Out on deeper waters, they faced new challenges—different species, new techniques, and the thrill of offshore fishing.

Safety officers from the Civic Action Team were on hand throughout the day to ensure a safe and smooth event. The young fishers, however, needed little motivation; their excitement was unmistakable as they reeled in fish under the open sky.

Top performers of the day were:

1st – Khol Mesebeluu

2nd – Idub Alosius

3rd – Ngirabaliau Bernardo

More important than the competition itself was a key lesson: catch and release. Each participant practiced this conservation-focused approach—turning a day of fishing into a lesson in stewardship and respect for Palau’s marine resources.

From Youth Skills to Tourism Growth

The lessons learned on the water extend far beyond a single event. Catch and release is at the heart of the global sport fishing industry—a form of tourism where visitors travel not to keep their catch, but to experience the thrill, skill, and beauty  of sustainable fishing.

Around the world, traveling anglers seek charters that offer excitement, professional guidance, and the chance to release their fish unharmed. This is the direction of sport fishing in Palau: visitors boarding well-equipped boats, guided by experienced local captains, pursuing big game fish in pristine waters and returning to shore with stories, photos, and memories.

By teaching young anglers to embrace catch and release today, Palau is shaping its next generation of captains, guides, and ambassadors—those who will one day welcome sport fishing visitors and support a growing tourism sector. The economic impact spreads throughout the community, benefiting boat operators, tackle suppliers, hotels, restaurants, and transport providers.

The Palau Sport Fishing Association extends its appreciation to NECO Marine, the

Civic Action Team, and all partners who made this event a success.
