Koror, Palau – The status of Cary Levitre, Director of Palau’s Bureau of Public Safety (BPS), is unclear following mixed messages about his resignation.

On February 26, Levitre submitted a letter to Minister of Justice Uduch Sengebau-Senior resigning from his position, effective March 15, 2024. The letter reportedly blamed the Minister for his departure.

However, President Whipps stated at a March 6 press conference that he had just received the resignation letter and deferred comment to the Minister.

Further clouding the issue, a March 12 memo from Levitre to Lt. Kenny Sengebau designated Sengebau as Acting Director.

Recent reports suggest Levitre may still be Director, though on personal leave with Sengebau acting in his absence.

The Palauan government has not provided a clear explanation for the discrepancy.  (By: L.N. Reklai)
