KOROR, Palau (AP) — Authorities in Koror have captured dangerous inmate Amador Osima, ending a three-day manhunt that followed his escape from jail earlier this week.
Osima was apprehended at 9:12 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the Ngesekes area without incident, officials said. His capture brought relief to residents who had expressed fear and concern after news of his escape spread across the community.
The inmate had escaped from custody on Monday, March 16, at around 4 p.m. Authorities have not disclosed how Osima—who was serving time for murder, child rape and sexual assault of a minor—managed to flee the facility in broad daylight. Officials also have not explained how a detainee with a history of escapes and attempted escapes dating back to 2013 was able to evade security.
While the arrest has eased immediate concerns, questions remain about public safety and prison security. Community members have called on authorities to provide assurances that measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents and to ensure that individuals deemed dangerous, particularly to children, remain securely in custody.
