Koror, Palau – On November 27, 2024, the Koror State Government Department of Conservation Law and Enforcement (KSG-DCLE) partnered with the Palau Pledge Dive Club to conduct a spawning dive monitoring as part of the Koror State’s Resilient Reef Initiative (RISL-RRI) Sustainable Fisheries Project. The dive took place from 5:30 am to 12:30pm, focusing on the monitoring and data collection on the Kemedukl (Bumphead Parrotfish), while providing a transformative educational experience for students.

The event was aimed at supporting sustainable fishing practices by gathering accurate data on fish spawning patterns, which is vital for ensuring the health and resilience of Palau’s marine ecosystem. The Kemedukl monitoring activity served as an opportunity to showcase the beautiful wonders of Palau’s underwater world to participating students. By diving into the Ngerumekaol Conservation waters, students developed a deeper appreciation for its critical role in supporting marine biodiversity and bolstering the tourism industry.

This dive activity also served to strengthen the partnership between KSG-DCLE and the Friends of PNMS. It established a solid foundation for collaboration with the Palau Pledge Dive Club while instilling a sense of stewardship in protecting and preserving our oceans’ valuable resources. The dive highlighted the importance of marine conservation, enhancing resilience to climate challenges, and adopting best practices for diving.

Students discovered the importance of maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem and explored ways to improve its ability to recover from the impacts of climate change. This activity provided them with valuable insights into the connection between marine conservation and sustainable economic opportunities such as tourism, which are crucial to Palau’s economic sustainability.

The KSG-DCLE team and the Sustainable Fisheries Project members, are grateful for the collaborative spirit of Palau Pledge Dive Club and the enthusiasm of the students, whose participation contributes to the long- term vision of a resilient and thriving marine environment.
