The new multipurpose basketball gymnasium was unveiled on December 22 at Echang, Meyuns after nearly a year of construction. The Basketball Court housing is equipped with a solar photo-voltaic lighting system and a newly built presentation stage for performances and other events. The $450,000 facility now serves the community with glass-backboards, a full court, side half-court areas with bleacher seats, a facility office, and a renewable solar energy system to light up the games at night.
Paid for by the Republic of China-Taiwan through Grant Funding, the design of the facility was by the preferences and recommendations of the Echang youth.
President Remengesau expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Taiwan for their continued support in Palau’s youth programs and giving such a great holiday gift to the people of Echang. In his remarks, President Remengesau reflected on the young people’s excitement at the ceremony and applauded their wisdom in their personal design of the facility that considers a renewable energy source and utilizes the open air to freely flow through the court during hot days.
Taiwan Ambassador Michael Y.K. Tseng expressed his pleasure of being able to work with President Remengesau to bring such an important facility to the youth. “This facility will surely strengthen camaraderie among the youth through the sport of basketball, promote good health through exercise and provide a facility for community programs, while being environmentally conscious. I am pleased to be a part of this and congratulations to the youth of Echang.” Said Ambassador Tseng. [/restrict]
