for “World Tsunami Awareness Day” in Kumamoto, Japan
The Embassy of Japan is pleased to announce this year’s Youth Ambassadors from Palau to attend the High School Students Summit on “World Tsunami Awareness Day” 2024 in Kumamoto, which will be held from October 19 to 25 in Japan.
Since 2016, one high school in Palau is provided the opportunity to participate in the annual summit held in Japan, which coincides with the World Tsunami Awareness Day on November 5. This year, five students from Emmaus Bethania High School, Mr. Cooper Tkel, Ms. Jasmine Eberdong, Ms. Jireh-Lynn Ngirachemoi, Ms. Lara Kunihiro, and Mr. McWayne Ingais along with their teacher, Mr. McQuade Alfonso will be participating in the summit.
During the summit, high school students from 43 countries and regions worldwide will participate to learn about methods for reducing damage of natural disasters and also engage with other students from around the world. Participants will attend tree planting activities and seminars on the environment and disaster prevention, observe businesses and related institutions, build awareness and knowledge of disaster risk, and promote understanding and friendship toward Japan. The summit serves as a learning platform where youth from different nations can come together to share their knowledge and discuss past natural disaster experiences with their peers.
This event also serves as an opportunity for Youth Ambassadors to explore diverse cultures, make new friendships, and establish connections that enable ongoing idea and information exchange even after they return home. Additionally, it is expected that attendees will develop into future leaders in disaster risk management within their own nations.
