KOROR, Palau — The Palau Environmental Quality Protection Board (EQPB) has extended the public comment period for the draft environmental review of a proposed U.S. military radar site in Ngaraard State until June 12, 2025.
The 30-day extension applies to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Tactical Multi-Mission Over-the-Horizon Radar Transmitter Facility, or TACMOR Tx. The original deadline was May 14.
In a notice signed by EQPB Chairman Florencio Yamada, the extension was granted after a written request from the project applicant and its representatives. The applicant cited the need to relocate technical experts from overseas to participate in upcoming public hearings and answer community questions.
Yamada said the extension would ensure the public is well informed about the TACMOR Tx project. He emphasized the importance of having the applicant’s technical team present to explain the project and respond to concerns.
The radar site in Ngaraard is one of three TACMOR facilities the U.S. plans to build in Palau, with others located in Angaur and the Southwest Islands. The Ngaraard project has faced criticism from state leaders and residents, who claim the EQPB’s permitting process failed to adequately consider their input.
A group of young Palauans also raised the issue with the United Nations, alleging violations of environmental protections and indigenous rights under Palauan and international law.
In response, EQPB said the extension also considers the complexity of the project and the draft EIS, giving the public more time to review the documents and provide feedback.
Written comments can be submitted in person at the EQPB office or by email to palaueqpb@gmail.com by June 12. For more information, the public may contact EQPB at (680) 488-1639 or 488-3600.
EQPB is encouraging active public participation before the environmental review is finalized.
