Sex crimes should be everyone’s concern.
Fijian Defense and National Security Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola says sexual offences are increasing which is a reflection of degraded values in our communities.
“Rape increased by 5.2 percent, assault with intent to commit rape 300 percent, sexual assaults by a 116.7 percent, abduction of persons under 18 years of age with intent to have carnal knowledge increased by 100 percent.”
He says everyone needs to help to combat these deplorable acts which in 2016 was responsible for six hundred and thirty two cases of sexual offences against children.
“Total 1, 226 criminal cases reported on child victims, 632 cases were sexual offenses against children which is 51.5 percent.”
With a no drop policy and zero tolerance measures in place, the Minister also highlighted that a multifaceted approach has been adopted to work at all levels to try and curb sexual abuse.
He made the revelations in parliament while delivering a ministerial statement on sexual offences.
