KOROR, Palau – Dec 21, 2023 – A routine fire call in Palau took a grim turn when firefighters discovered a burned body in a cleared area between Melekeok and Ngchesar. Authorities are scrambling to identify the deceased and determine the cause of death.

Police received reports of a fire at the Ewall river area, a cleared park site between Melekeok and Ngchesar, at 11:45 am on Wednesday. Upon arrival, firefighters made the unsettling discovery of a burned male body. The remains were transported to the hospital for further examination, but officials remain tight-lipped about the victim’s nationality or any potential leads.

“We are still in the early stages of the investigation,” a police spokesperson told Island Times. “The investigation and autopsy will be conducted to identify the deceased and establish the cause of death.”

While the victim’s nationality remains elusive, the investigation seeks to unravel the cause of death, establish identity, and gather any related details. Notably, no missing person report has been filed, further intensifying the case.

Sources close to the investigation hint at Asian descent, though official confirmation from police is pending. This development reminds of two unsolved missing person cases from the past two years, both involving Chinese nationals: a woman vanished without a trace, presumably due to foul play, and a man was kidnapped in front of Hanpa Mart, forced into a vehicle, and last seen heading towards Klubed dock in Airai.

The Bureau of Public Safety emphasizes that the investigation is ongoing, urging the public to refrain from speculation and respect the ongoing process.
