The first badminton tournament between China and Palau kicked off Saturday with World Champion and Chinese Olympic medalist Zhang Jiewen gracing the games. According to a press release the tournament is to “promote the cultural and sports exchange between China and Palau.” The event, which is sponsored by Trip Easy started on April 15 and will end today. Six teams from Philippines, Palau, Taiwan and China participated in this tournament with 50 participants from the four countries.
[restrict] A team from China is headed by Jiewen, who, during the launching of the tournament April 15, admired Palau and said it’s her first time to visit the country and looking forward to another year of badminton tournament.
Palau Badminton Association President, Ojhea Perdon welcomed the participants and stressed that the tournament is an opportunity for the badminton players in Palau to compete with other teams outside of the country.
Chief of Staff Elbedechel welcomed the participants on behalf of President Remengesau and hoped that invitational such as the Trip Easy tournament will encourage more Palauans to play badminton.
The team from China also took the opportunity to donate several badminton gears.
The badminton sports has gained popularity in Palau for over a decade, with several tournaments set every year. [/restrict]
