Melekeok, Palau – The search for a missing fisherman has concluded after his remains were found, indicating an attack by a large fish, most likely a shark.

Livingstone Elechuus, 58, was reported missing on May 2, 2024, after failing to return from a solo fishing trip in his kayak. He had reportedly set out that morning to catch fish for a Senior Citizen’s Day event.

Authorities were notified that evening when Elechuus did not return home. A search commenced and his remains were recovered the following day, May 3, around 11 a.m.

“The condition of the remains suggested an attack by a large fish, possibly a shark or sharks,” a police spokesperson said. The remains showed significant damage and missing limbs. Searchers also reported sightings of sharks in the area.

Elechuus’ overturned kayak was later discovered by fishermen from Ngiwal.

The Bureau of Public Safety has concluded the search and is finalizing the investigation to provide answers for the family. However, Palau lacks the expertise to determine the exact circumstances of the attack or the specific type of shark involved.

“While we cannot alleviate public concerns, we urge the community to be vigilant and take precautions when going out to fish,” said Chief Ngiramengior, Public Information Officer for the Bureau of Public Safety. “This is the best advice we can offer. Please exercise caution when venturing out on the water.”

Elechuus was a family man and a deacon at his church in Melekeok.
