Billions are flowing into the fight against climate change, but a dark undercurrent threatens to divert this green tide: corruption. As investments in renewable energy and sustainability soar, so does the risk of dirty hands siphoning off vital funds. This isn’t just a financial problem; it’s a roadblock to achieving vital emissions cuts and securing the planet’s future.

At a high-level event at the 10th Conference of the State Parties on Combatting Corruption to Protect the Environment, research and study results were shared, showing the role of corruption in environmental protection endeavors.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is sounding the alarm, warning that corruption can cripple climate action and derail global goals. “Global efforts to mitigate climate change must include initiatives to combat crimes that affect the environment as well as corruption,” says Ghada Waly, UNODC’s Executive Director.

The vulnerabilities are apparent. Lax regulations, opaque accounting, and weak oversight create fertile ground for greenwashing schemes and outright theft. Imagine: millions earmarked for solar panels diverted to fund luxury mansions or carbon credits traded under the table, enriching a select few while the planet suffers. The consequences are dire: slowed progress on renewable energy, weakened environmental protection, and ultimately, a hotter, more unstable planet for everyone.

UNODC is stepping up to combat this green-collar crime. Its Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment equips countries with tools to strengthen legal frameworks, investigate environmental crimes, and prosecute perpetrators. They’re working with governments, businesses, and civil society to build robust anti-corruption safeguards around climate finance.

The battle lines are drawn. On one side, billions of dollars and the future of our planet. On the other, the insidious tentacles of corruption. The fight against climate change cannot be won without tackling the green greed that seeks to exploit it. UNODC’s call to action is clear: clean up the green finance landscape and ensure every dollar goes towards building a sustainable future, not lining the pockets of criminals.
