PORT MORESBY (POST COURIER) —Papua New Guinea Member of Parliament for Goroka, Aiye Tambua has been charged with 26 counts of persistent sexual abuse against his wife and two daughters.
The member turned up for the interview conducted by investigators from the NCD Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Monday.
The MP is facing allegations of sexual assault pertaining from a complaint from his wife.
As news spread of Member for Goroka, Aiye Tambua’s, interview with the police at the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Headquarters, his wife and two daughters have breathed a sigh of relief.
Tambua 45 years old has been charged with 26 counts of persistent sexual abuse against his wife and two daughters.
The charges are:
*One count of Rape
*Ten counts of sexual assault
*One count of persistent sexual abuse
*Six counts sexual touching
*Six counts of compel to touch
*Two counts abuse of trust authority and dependency
Elizabeth Tambua in an exclusive interview with Post-Courier said she was relieved.
However, she questioned how long it took for him to respond to a formal invite.
“I don’t know why it’s taken him so long to respond to a formal invite for questioning.”
“From what I know it’s taken two invites to get him to respond.” Tambua said.
“Whoever is protecting him must know that they are covering a man who has failed to protect his family.”
However, she said, “I am happy with the work done by police investigating team so far as well”.
Elizabeth said it is a sigh of relief for her family. It was a long time coming but it has been done.
The case was first reported in 2023 in which allegations were raised against the sitting MP by his wife and daughters.
In 2023, after the uplifting of an Interim Protection Order (IPO) a letter was sighted by Post-Courier addressed by then Assistant Commissioner Police and NCD and Central Commander Anthony Wagambie Jr sent to Tambua to avail himself for an interview with police investigators from NCD on Thursday, December 14.
However, at the time he asked for an extension of time.
Again, another letter was sent for Tambua to avail himself for an interview on 25 January, 2024 of which he again asked for an extension of time.
After the two attempts however, another circular was sighted by Post-Courier of which the files of the investigation were handed over to the Police Headquarters.
The interview has now been completed with the 26 counts of alleged persistent sexual assault against Tambua.
Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika has confirmed bail has been denied for MP Tambua.
