Palauans Assert Independence Amid Global Pressures
In our recent 12th General Election, Palauans came together to choose leaders to guide us over the next four years. Despite spirited debates and differences of opinion, we conducted this process peacefully and respectfully, proving once again the strength of our democratic values.
This election wasn’t just about geopolitics or external narratives; it was about our own vision for Palau’s future. Our votes reflected our beliefs in what would best uplift our quality of life, drive economic recovery, support the younger generation, and ensure the health and well-being of our elders. It was a statement that our decisions are shaped by local priorities and the needs of our people, not simply by global powers’ agendas.
In the weeks leading up to the election, outside voices tried to frame our political landscape as “pro-U.S.” versus “pro-China,” reducing our diverse perspectives to fit into narrow labels. This oversimplification disregarded our unique context and priorities, imposing foreign narratives on what should be an independent and uniquely Palauan process.
It’s disheartening to feel dismissed, as if our thoughts don’t matter unless they fit into some predetermined category. President Whipps once reflected on Palau’s history, reminding us of the times foreign powers—Spain, Germany, Japan, and later the United States—claimed our lands without our consent. Only through the U.N.’s Trust Territory mandate did we gain the chance to shape our own destiny. Now, three decades later, it seems we’re again at risk—not by direct takeover, but by subtle pressures that aim to reshape our opinions to align with others’ priorities.
This election, a true Day of Democracy for us, stands as a testament to our right to self-determination. We must continue to protect our sovereignty with pride, honoring the words of our constitution: “Exercising our inherent sovereignty, We the people of Palau proclaim and reaffirm our immemorial right to be supreme in these islands of Palau, our homeland.” By: L.N.
