On January 18, 2021, Our Ocean Conference Secretariat hosted the handover ceremony for the disaster prevention goods (worth up to approx. 75 thousand dollars) provided through Japan’s grant aid. The ceremony was attended by Minister Marugg, Minister Sengebau and Ambassador Karasawa.
The ceremony presented 100 units of tactical flashlights, 50 units of caution tapes and 50 units of handheld metal detectors. These items are expected to be used for disaster prevention as well as the security for the international conferences such as Our Ocean Conference.
At the ceremony, Minister Sengebau stated that the items are needed for the successful Our Ocean Conference, which will hopefully take place in the second half of 2021, and thanked the generous support from Ambassador Karasawa and the Government of Japan.
Ambassador Karasawa, by making reference to the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, remarked in his speech that Japan needs to share its experience about disaster prevention with partners. He further conveyed his hope that Our Ocean Conference will take place with good security using these supplies.
Minister Marugg concluded the ceremony with her remarks, expressing her appreciation towards Japan’s support for Palau and stating these supplies would benefit a lot for safety and protection.
