KOROR, Palau — A 36-year-old inmate at Koror Jail was fatally stabbed Sunday, authorities confirmed.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was found unresponsive inside the jail with multiple stab wounds to the neck, according to a police report. He was transported to the Belau National Hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead.
In a statement, the Bureau of Public Safety said the victim was serving a 10-year sentence for first-degree assault and second-degree escape. He also faced additional charges tied to violations of his release conditions, including aggravated assault, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and attempted murder.
Authorities have not disclosed where the stabbing occurred inside the jail, whether the victim was housed with a cellmate, or how other inmates were affected.
Police said they have identified a suspect and are investigating the circumstances of the attack. Officials declined to release further details including the name of the victim but said security measures have been reinforced to protect both inmates and the community.
