Koror, Palau – February 17, 2025 – The Embassy of Japan hosted a grand reception at Palasia Hotel to celebrate the 65th birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, reaffirming the strong and enduring friendship between Japan and Palau.
The event was attended by a distinguished gathering, including His Excellency President Surangel Whipps Jr., First Lady, members of the Council of Chiefs, Bilung Gloria Salii, members of the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK), Ministers, Governors, Speakers of State Legislatures, the diplomatic corps, representatives from sports federations, Sakurakai, and women’s organizations.
The reception commenced with the national anthems of Palau and Japan, followed by remarks from Ambassador ORIKASA Hiroyuki and President Whipps.
In his speech, Ambassador Orikasa emphasized the values of diplomacy and cooperation, stating, “I believe that realistic and ideal diplomacy requires dedication to the values of tolerance, mutual respect, and willingness to give and share, as well as a selfless attitude and readiness to serve our countries. We must take practical actions, moving beyond mere sentiment to achieve concrete results for mutual benefit. I renew my determination to strengthen our bilateral relationship and promote regional stability, peace, and prosperity.”
President Whipps, in his response, reflected on the deep historical ties between the two nations. “The relationship between our two countries is a longstanding one. It began in the 19th century coming to the shores of Palau and further developed from 1914,” he noted. He further highlighted the strong people-to-people connections, which continue to serve as the foundation of the Japan-Palau partnership.
The celebration was not only a tribute to His Majesty the Emperor but also marked the 10th anniversary of the visit of Their Majesties Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita to Palau—a historic moment that underscored the deep bonds between the two nations.
The Embassy of Japan expressed its hope that the friendship between Japan and Palau will continue to flourish for generations to come, as both countries work together to promote mutual prosperity and shared values.
