Leaders from Japan and Pacific Island nations reaffirmed their strong partnership at the 10th PALM meeting in Tokyo. The two sides committed to collaborate on key areas to achieve a shared vision for a resilient Pacific by 2050.
Key Outcomes:
- Strengthened Partnership: Leaders agreed to work together on seven priority areas aligned with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. These areas include political leadership, people-centered development, peace and security, resource and economic development, climate change and disasters, ocean and environment, and technology and connectivity.
- Focus on Sustainable Development: Both sides emphasized the importance of ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for the Pacific region. This includes addressing climate change, promoting disaster preparedness, and managing ocean resources responsibly.
- Japan’s Continued Support: Japan pledged to continue its long-standing commitment to the Pacific region through its “All Japan” efforts. This includes providing financial assistance, human resource development programs, and technological expertise.
- Cooperation on International Issues: Leaders discussed regional security concerns and called for peaceful solutions. They also reaffirmed their commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and UN reform.
- Next Steps: Leaders agreed to hold a Ministerial Interim Meeting before the next PALM summit in 2027, which Japan will host.
TheLeaders acknowledged the ongoing dialogue regarding the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and welcomed Japan’s commitment to scientific transparency and continued engagement on this issue.
