On August 20, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ship JS Ariake carried out a significant goodwill exercise with the PSS KEDAM, offshore. The primary objective of this exercise was to bolster boarding inspection capabilities and strengthen cooperation between JMSDF and Palau Marine Law enforcement.

This collaborative effort comes at a crucial time as the region faces increasing challenges from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. Additionally, the area has witnessed growing threats from drug-related crimes, with these illicit activities being carried out both in the air and at sea. The rising concerns about territorial boundaries and sovereignty underscore the need for heightened vigilance and improved security measures.

The exercise demonstrated the commitment of both Japan and Palau to maintaining maritime security and safeguarding the region’s waters. It highlighted the dedication made by the Government of Japan, including the JMSDF and Japan Coast Guard, to supporting their regional partners in addressing these pressing issues. The continued presence and cooperation of these forces are vital in promoting a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” a vision shared by both Japan and Palau.

The goodwill exercise not only enhanced operational capabilities but also reinforced the strong partnership between Japan and Palau in ensuring the safety and security of their maritime domain.
