Koror, Palau – In the spirit of 30th Constitutional Government Celebration and the United Nations Day a historic first for Koror State, a leadership retreat was convened on October 23, 2024, to address the urgent threat of climate change. This groundbreaking event marked a significant step towards equipping state leaders with the knowledge and tools necessary to build resilience in the community and governance system.

Participants, including Governor Eyos Rudimch and State Legislators led by Speaker Uchel Sechewas, delved into the complexities of climate change and its specific impacts on Koror State. Through interactive discussions, leaders gained a deeper understanding of climate science, predicted impacts, and the disproportionate vulnerability of certain hamlets.

One of the highlights of the retreat was the series of site visits that provided a tangible understanding of climate change’s impacts. By witnessing firsthand the erosion of coastlines, the degradation of coral reefs, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, leaders were able to connect the abstract concepts of climate change to the real-world experiences of their communities and the importance of building resilience.

The retreat culminated in the development of a shared vision for a climate-resilient Koror State. Leaders collaborated to create a unified roadmap that will guide future policy and action. The identified policy priorities will serve as a blueprint for the State government to better manage its resources and build resilience in the face of climate change.

As a follow-up to the retreat, a second session is scheduled for next month to review the outcomes and refine the shared vision with policy pathways to build resilience in Koror State. This continued engagement will ensure that the momentum generated by the retreat is sustained and translated into tangible actions.

The Koror State leadership retreat is a testament to the state’s commitment in addressing climate change and building resilience. By investing in the capacity of its leaders, Koror State is positioning itself at the forefront of climate resilience efforts in Palau.

Yvonne Ueda and Jubilee Kuartei from The Nature Conservancy, Joe Aitaro from Climate Change Office along with Andrea Uchel, KSG Chief Resilience Officer served as facilitators for the retreat. Their expertise and guidance were instrumental in fostering productive discussions and achieving tangible results.
