Koror, Palau – October 29, 2024 – The kickoff meeting for Lebuu’s Voyage, a significant scientific expedition into the Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS), was held on October 28 at Palasia’s Ming Hall. His Excellency President Surangel Whipps Jr., Senator Umiich Sengebau, and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Steven Victor were among the notable attendees, highlighting the significance of this initiative.
“I know when you first came to visit us and let us know that it was happening, it was very exciting because I think we all know and we all agree that we know more about space than we know about the ocean, said President Whipps of the expedition, Adding, he emphasized Palau’s commitment to sustainable practices since 2015, highlighting the transition from traditional fishing to scientific research as a means to manage resources responsibly. “Every little thing we do does have an impact,” he noted, stressing the importance of understanding marine ecosystems to advocate against deep-sea mining effectively.
The expedition aims to explore previously uncharted areas of the PNMS, utilizing advanced technologies aboard the E/V Nautilus. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), committed to enhancing understanding of ocean biodiversity and its conservation. “The importance of this exploration will enhance our knowledge to continue to bring large ocean states into the global conversation around managing and protecting ocean diversity for the good of the planet,” stated Minister Victor.
Elsei Tellei, a researcher from PICRC, expressed enthusiasm for the expedition’s community involvement. “The expedition will be going out into parts of the marine sanctuary… There are two different trips split into 11 days each to allow more people to join,” she explained.
The first expedition team for Lebuu’s Voyage is scheduled to commence on October 29-November 8, 2024 while the second expedition team will continue from November 11-November 22, 2024. The data collected during this expedition will be vital for future conservation efforts and will be made publicly accessible through live streaming at www.NautilusLive.org. This initiative not only aims to uncover the mysteries of Palau’s deep waters but also seeks to engage local communities in marine science and conservation efforts.
As Palau embarks on this journey of exploration, it stands at the forefront of global discussions on ocean conservation, reaffirming its role as a steward of its rich marine resources.
