A man who went missing after a night fishing trip was found dead Saturday, April 27, near the Aimeliik northern reef, authorities said.

Ngiralulk Tewid had gone fishing around 5 p.m. Friday and told those close to him that he expected to return by 8 p.m. When he failed to come home and did not answer numerous phone calls, family members reported him missing.

A brief search led to the discovery of Tewid’s boat adrift near the reef. He was found in the water next to the boat with a rope tied around his hand. According to a family member, it was believed he may have tied himself to the boat to prevent drifting away. A fishing line was reportedly tangled around the boat’s propeller, and it is suspected that he may have been attempting to free it.

Tewid was known to frequently fish alone, and weather conditions on the night he went missing were described as calm.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the incident.  (By: L.N. Reklai)
