KOROR, Palau – Maris Stella School celebrated the opening of a new language classroom on Feb. 20, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between Japan and Palau and fostering cultural exchange.

The $52,000 classroom, funded by a $40,000 donation from RAM Corporation and a $12,000 contribution from Mr. Katsuo Fuji, principal of the Japanese Language School, addresses a long-standing need. The Japan-Palau Club, which has offered Japanese language classes for decades, previously faced a lack of dedicated space, forcing students to switch between classrooms at Maris Stella and Mindzenty High School.
“This new classroom not only serves the Japanese language students but serves a much wider community surrounding the school,” said Fr. Arthur Leger S.J., acting director of Catholic Mission Schools. He highlighted the potential for the space to serve as a disaster shelter for residents of the nearby Idid hamlet.
Japan’s Ambassador to Palau, His Excellency Hiroyuki Orikasa, emphasized the historical and cultural ties between the two nations, dating back to the 19th century. He expressed gratitude to Maris Stella and the Japan Club for their dedication to promoting Japanese language and culture.
The opening ceremony, led by Maris Stella students, embodied the collaborative spirit of the project. Sixth-grader Diluei Reklai served as master of ceremonies, while fifth-graders conducted prayers and sang both Palauan and Japanese national anthems.
The new language classroom represents more than just a dedicated learning space. It stands as a symbol of partnership, cultural understanding, and community resilience, paving the way for future generations to connect and learn from each other.
