Koror, Palau – The Ministry of Health and Human Services (MHHS) has issued a public advisory following a noticeable increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases in Palau. The alert comes as the nation hosts a surge of visitors from across the Pacific for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games.
Symptoms of ILI typically include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, and fatigue, with some individuals also reporting nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. While not all cases are severe, the Ministry is urging the public to remain vigilant and take steps to prevent further spread of respiratory infections.
“This situation highlights the importance of practicing preventive measures to limit the spread of respiratory illnesses,” MHHS said in its public notice. “This is particularly important now as Palau welcomes athletes, officials, and visitors from around the region.”
The Ministry recommends the following safety measures:

- Practice regular handwashing and proper coughing and sneezing etiquette.
- Wear masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
- Stay home if feeling unwell, and seek medical attention if necessary.
MHHS also emphasized the importance of following the guidance of medical personnel stationed at all Pacific Mini Games venues and encouraged the public to stay updated through its official Facebook page: MHHS Facebook.
The public is further advised to familiarize themselves with the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website: CDC COVID Symptoms.
MHHS expressed gratitude for the continued cooperation of the community in maintaining public health during this festive and high-traffic period. (PR)
