Mindszenty High School, named after Hungarian Cardinal József Mindszenty, commemorated its 75th anniversary on September 30, 2024, celebrating its rich history and connection with Hungary. The event highlighted the growing friendship between Palau and Hungary, with Hungary’s Ambassador, Dr. Titanilla Toth, stationed in the Philippines, reaffirming support for education in Palau.

The school’s name carries a unique story. Years ago, McManus, a key figure in the school’s establishment, was given the option to name the school after Cardinal Mindszenty in exchange for a sizeable amount of funds to support its development. Cardinal Mindszenty, a prominent figure in Catholic education and a defender of religious freedom, was imprisoned during Hungary’s communist regime for his beliefs. The decision to honor Mindszenty’s legacy was seen as a fitting tribute to the school’s mission of upholding Catholic values.

Students at the event participated in a trivia game, where they were divided into three teams. One of the questions asked whether Palau and Hungary were connected by sea. Team Three answered correctly, noting that no such connection exists. Hungary is landlocked. The activity spurred reflection on the unique geographical blessings Palau enjoys.

President Surangel Whipps Jr., in his remarks, emphasized the importance of religious freedom, as enshrined in Palau’s Constitution, and how it resonates with the school’s mission. “Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, which is a principle we hold dear and respect for all,” Whipps said, noting that this principle aligns with Cardinal Mindszenty’s advocacy for religious rights, a cause for which he was imprisoned under the communist regime.

Board member Chilton highlighted the school’s historical significance and shared that the son of the Minister of Education, is a proud graduate of Mindszenty High School.

Dr. Toth presented the school with a collection of books, underscoring Hungary’s commitment to fostering education and cultural ties with Palau. The event marked a significant milestone, not just for the school’s 75th anniversary, but also for Palau’s 30th year of independence.

The celebrations included the unveiling of a statue honoring Palau’s catholic history, with reflections from Palau Constitution on the importance of respecting all religions. Mindszenty High School remains a beacon of Catholic education in Palau.
