“Educators: Shaping the Future Citizens of Palau”

Mindszenty High School, a private institution known for its small, close-knit student body, prioritizes instilling moral values alongside academics, according to Principal Alan Marbou.

In an interview with Island Times intern Marissa Spires, Mr. Marbou highlighted the school’s core values of “family, Christian principles, and teaching their youth to be both good students and citizens.” The curriculum reflects this focus, with courses in English, math, science, physical education, history, social studies, religion, and, most recently, traditional Palauan arts and crafts. College preparatory courses are also offered, with plans to expand them to lower grade levels.

Beyond academics, Mindszenty emphasizes community engagement. Students participate in mandatory service projects, volunteer work, and fundraising activities. This focus on social responsibility aims to connect them with the wider Palauan community.

Mr. Marbou acknowledges the challenges faced by today’s youth, including peer pressure, substance abuse, and the influence of social media. He advocates for a compassionate approach, prioritizing understanding the root causes of student difficulties.

“Why might a student fall behind in school? Why has a student’s behavior suddenly changed?” Mr. Marbou said, outlining key questions that can help identify underlying issues. He shared a personal story about successfully connecting with troubled students, demonstrating his commitment to building trust and addressing student needs holistically.

Looking ahead, Mindszenty plans to incorporate technology into its curriculum, transitioning from a text-book based approach to a blend of traditional and online learning. While mindful of the potential risks of increased internet access, Mr. Marbou sees it as an opportunity to expand educational and career networks, particularly for students interested in business.

The school also grapples with attracting alumni back to share their experiences with current students. Additionally, staff retention has been a challenge, with fluctuating salaries and diverse job opportunities creating a competitive market for educators. Mr. Marbou emphasizes the importance of educators’ dedication, stating, “There should be more emphasis on ‘giving to give and not solely to receive.'”

Mr. Marbou’s message to parents is one of close involvement. He encourages them to stay informed about their children’s interests, friendships, activities, and role models. He acknowledges the challenges of navigating adolescence but stresses the importance of continued guidance and support. Ultimately, Mr. Marbou emphasizes the crucial role of educators, mentors, and leaders in shaping Palau’s future through the success of its youth.
