As the countdown continues for the official opening of the 2025 Pacific Mini Games on June 29, one of the most anticipated moments remains shrouded in mystery: the identity of the final torchbearer and the number of individuals participating in the torch relay.
Sources close to the organizing committee have confirmed that Alexandra Patris, a celebrated Palauan athlete and former medalist, will be among the torchbearers. Patris made her mark at the 2003 South Pacific Mini Games in Fiji, earning a silver medal in the 58-kilogram clean and jerk weightlifting category at just 14 years old. Her twin sister, Alexandrina Patris, also competed at the time and secured a bronze medal in the 63-kilogram category.
Now, 22 years later, Alexandra Patris returns to the spotlight as one of the 2025 Pacific Mini Games torchbearers, symbolizing not only the legacy of Palau’s athletes but also the enduring spirit of sportsmanship and national pride.
While the participation of Patris is now confirmed, officials have remained tight-lipped about who will be given the honor of lighting the cauldron to officially commence the Games. The full composition of the torch relay team has also been kept under wraps, fueling speculation and anticipation just days ahead of the grand opening.
The torch relay is expected to include notable athletes and figures from across Palau’s sporting history, paying tribute to past achievements while igniting the spirit of competition for the Games.
The cauldron lighting will serve as the emotional high point of the ceremony, and organizers say the surprise is intended to make the moment even more meaningful for the crowd and athletes alike.
The Pacific Mini Games will bring together athletes from across the region, and the secrecy surrounding the opening ritual only adds to the growing excitement as Palau prepares to host one of its most significant sporting events in recent years. (By: Eustoria Marie Borja)
