One of the most sacred traditional customs of Palau called Omelobech, a traditional ceremony for the appointment of a new chief, took place on Friday last week at Bai ra Rengarairrai in Ordomel. The second chief of Airai. Chief Ngiraked and other chiefs of Rengarairrai were present for this sacred ceremony.
On this day, Mr. Alonz Kyota assumed his seat as Chief Rdialul. Kyota carries many years of experience in sundry industries in Palau. In 1982-1991, Kyota was the Assistant Superintendent for Mobil Oil Micronesia, Inc. Soon after, he became a Civil Preparedness Officer for the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) under the Office of the Vice President. A few years later, he became the NEMO Coordinator.
Beyond his day jobs over the years Kyota has shown pronounced involvement in community affairs and Palauan customs showing his commitment to the community and upholding his responsibilities. His colourful résumé, knowledge of Palau and experience in leadership roles altogether supports his appointment to become Chief Rdialul.
Omelobech is a traditional ceremony that is still practiced today. To tour the Bai ra Rengarairrai (Airai Bai) and experience traditional luncheon, call Palau Visitors Authority at 488-2793/1930 for advance reservation. (PR)
