Curtis Elobt has been appointed as the new Director of the Bureau of Public Safety, replacing Cary Levitre, who served much of his term outside Palau. Elobt took the oath of office on Sept. 11, 2024, at the Belau National Gymnasium, with President Surangel Whipps Jr., Vice President Uduch Sengebau-Senior, police officers, and administrative staff in attendance.

Elobt, like his predecessor, is a retired U.S. military veteran, having served 28 years and retiring as a Sergeant Major (E-9). According to government information, his military experience includes roles such as Drill Instructor, Chief Logistician, and Headquarters Commandant.

With four months remaining in the current administration’s term, Elobt faces significant challenges, including a demoralized police force and a worsening drug crisis. On the same day he was sworn in, Elobt appeared before a Senate oversight hearing.

Despite these challenges, Elobt expressed confidence in his ability to work with the police to achieve results, with support from the Olbiil Era Kelulau (Palau National Congress) and other leaders.

The Office of the Vice President and Minister of Justice also voiced its support, stating that Elobt’s “personal interaction set a positive tone for future collaboration and leadership” at the Bureau of Public Safety.

President Whipps echoed this sentiment, saying, “I believe Director Elobt has the passion, dedication, and discipline needed at this time to help move the Bureau of Public Safety forward.”
