KOROR, Palau – A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 13, 2024, to celebrate the opening of new facilities at the Palau National Aquaculture Center (PNAC) in Koror. The project, funded by Taiwan, aims to bolster Palau’s aquaculture industry, contributing to food security, economic opportunities, and marine resource sustainability.

Enhanced Capacity for Aquaculture Development

The new facilities include a microalgae cultivation room, a fish feed storage room, a fry breeding pond, and a milkfish broodstock pond. These advancements will provide a controlled environment for raising fish fry and cultivating essential food sources for aquaculture.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

Taiwan’s Ambassador to Palau, Jessica Lee, emphasized the ongoing partnership between the two nations. Beyond infrastructure improvements, Taiwan provides technical assistance to promote the aquaculture within local communities. This collaborative effort strengthens food security, biodiversity conservation, and economic prospects.

Sustainable Fishing Practices

Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. highlighted the importance of balancing resource utilization with conservation. The recent expansion of designated fishing areas is expected to increase demand for baitfish. The new PNAC facilities will play a crucial role in meeting this demand through sustainable aquaculture practices.

Collaboration is Key to Success

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment Steven Victor expressed his appreciation to Taiwan for its continuous support. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment (MAFE), the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM), state governments, educational institutions, and the private sector in propelling Palau’s aquaculture industry forward.

The ceremony concluded with a tour of the new facilities, where TTM personnel showcased the project’s future goals and the potential of the new infrastructure. The successful cultivation of rabbitfish and sea cucumber serves as a testament to the positive impact this initiative will have on Palau’s aquaculture sector.
