KOROR, Palau – For pet owners like Joy Yobech, Osebelel A Charm Animal Hospital has become an indispensable lifeline.
“I have been bringing my pets here for years, and they have been doing very well ever since,” Yobech said. She recalled rushing her dog to the clinic two weeks ago after it began panting heavily. Within minutes, Dr. Kristen Decina, the hospital’s founder, diagnosed the problem, prescribed medication and, three days later, the dog had recovered.
“Dr. Decina has helped me a lot with my dogs,” Yobech said. “She always does what’s best for every pet.”
Palauans’ love for their pets is growing, but many say the costs of care are a challenge. While praising the quality of service, some clients say the price of medications and treatments can add up quickly. They suggest government support, such as grants, subsidies or tax breaks for veterinary providers, could make care more affordable.
Osebelel A Charm, the nation’s first and only private veterinary hospital, provides services not found elsewhere in Palau. Its offerings include general wellness care, emergency treatment, 24-hour hospitalization, sick care, grooming, nail trimming, bathing and a fully stocked veterinary pharmacy.
Dr. Decina, who has practiced for more than 23 years in the United States and the Northern Mariana Islands, said Palau is fortunate compared to many islands in the region. “Facilities like Osebelel A Charm, Paws and the Animal Shelter make a tremendous difference,” she said.
The hospital recently expanded its team by hiring a trained veterinary technician, Cole, to work alongside Dr. Decina.
“When I arrived here, I saw a genuine need for the veterinary services I offer,” Decina said. “More than anything, I want to help people care for their animals on the island.”
For pet owners like Yobech, that commitment is clear.
