2021 Belau Games official opening ceremony last night welcomed over 2,600 athletes representing all of the 16 States of the Republic of Palau. Eighteen (18) different sports will be played in this 2021 Belau Games with most of the States participating in most of the sporting categories.
Special speaker at this event, a consummate athlete, local and regional tennis champion Ayana Rengiil, challenged the athletes to take their sporting experience as far as it can take them. “How far can we fly this flag? How far can we take it?” Relaying her varied experience in sports both locally, regionally and internationally, she said “sports open so many doors.”
Motivating the athletes, Ayana urged “Fight hard, play fair and have fun,” and “make the most of this 2021 Belau Games!”
This year’s Belau Games implements a proposal ““Belau Games 2021 and Beyond: Positioning an Active and Healthy Society”. Themes of the proposal are Exercise is Medicine, Food is Medicine and Thought as Medicine”, aimed at promoting active and healthy lifestyle. $320,000 was allocated under RPPL 11-8 to fund the 2021 Belau Games and to develop healthy lifestyle programs in each State.
