Journalists and media personnel from around the Pacific started two-day pre-summit workshops leading to the 5th Pacific Media Summit in Nuku’alofa, Tonga yesterday.
Pre-summit sessions include Role of Media Oversight and Accountability following the work of integrity institutions, Pacific Earth Journalism Network –Climate Change Reporting and Experiences and ICT Innovations, New Media and Knowledge Sharing: the role of media in the agriculture sector.
Media participants tackled the issue of the role of media oversight and accountability looking at examples and experiences in various jurisdictions and working on individual cases from each country. United Nations Pacific Anti-Corruption Program (UN-PRAC) in association Pacific Island News Association (PINA) sponsored the training for the journalists around the region.
The rest of the conference will address important issues facing media today including creating a digitally conducive environment for the media, empowering media for digital challenges, gender based violence and digital media, journalism and fake news, multi-media journalism as well as other challenges and opportunities facing media in the Pacific.
