Palau’s new ambassador to Taiwan, Gaafar J. Uherbelau, formally presented his credentials to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Sept. 9, reaffirming the longstanding relationship between the two countries and highlighting cooperation in education, health and capacity building.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (September 9, 2026) — Palau Ambassador Gaafar J. Uherbelau formally presented his Letters of Credence to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Sept. 9, marking the start of his diplomatic assignment and reaffirming the longstanding relationship between Palau and Taiwan.
The ceremony was held at Taiwan’s Presidential Office Building and opened with a rendition of Palau’s national anthem, “Belau Loba Klisiich,” by the Tri-Service Honor Guard. Uherbelau then formally reviewed the honor guard before presenting his credentials to Lai.
Lai welcomed Uherbelau and highlighted the Austronesian ties and shared democratic values between Taiwan and Palau.
He expressed appreciation for Palau’s continued support for Taiwan’s international participation and said he looked forward to further strengthening cooperation and advancing the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
In his remarks, Uherbelau emphasized that Palau-Taiwan cooperation is centered on people and practical benefits for both countries.
He pointed to Palauan students who have pursued education in Taiwan, Palauan patients who have received medical treatment there, and technical experts who have worked alongside communities in Palau to build local capacity and strengthen resilience.
Uherbelau reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding opportunities for people in both countries while upholding their shared democratic values.
The ambassador was accompanied at the ceremony by his wife, Mindy S. Uherbelau, First Secretary Nathan Salvador and Second Secretary Sachi S. Jones.
