KOROR, Palau – In a New Year’s address marked by somber remembrance and hopeful anticipation, Japanese Ambassador to Palau H.E. Orikasa Hiroyuki pledged to deepen cultural exchanges and strengthen Palau’s economy as the two nations enter the symbolic Year of the Dragon.

Hiroyuki opened the “Gashi Koukan Kai” gathering on Sunday by offering condolences to those affected by the recent earthquake and airplane crash in Japan. He expressed gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy from Palau, including messages from President Surangel Whipps and other officials.

The ambassador then turned his focus to the future, highlighting the significance of 2024. Not only does it usher in the dragon’s auspicious energy in the Oriental zodiac, but it also marks the 30th anniversaries of Palau’s independence and diplomatic relations with Japan.
“The Year 2024 signifies not just the passage of time,” Hiroyuki declared, “but also a chance to embrace an auspicious energy that the dragon embodies into strengthening our relationship.”
Among his priorities, Hiroyuki listed fostering personal exchanges at all levels, from government officials to grassroots communities. He also expressed a strong desire to establish direct flights between Japan and Palau, believing it would bolster tourism and showcase the island nation’s beauty. Additionally, he proposed introducing savings bonds to further stimulate Palau’s economy.
Hiroyuki acknowledged Japan’s expertise in fields like IT, agriculture, and healthcare, offering assistance in improving these sectors in Palau. He emphasized the importance of following up on past and ongoing projects to ensure their positive impact.
Recognizing the crucial role of individual relationships in strengthening the two nations’ bond, Hiroyuki encouraged attendees to embrace the spirit of the “Gashi Koukan Kai” by actively greeting and building connections with one another. “To be honest,” he admitted, “I have never been good at greeting people. But today, I will practice advice given to me by my late mother, who used to tell me that I should always greet everyone I meet with a firm and cheerful greeting, because it is free of charge.”
Hiroyuki’s New Year’s address painted a promising picture of increased cooperation, cultural exchange, and economic growth for both Japan and Palau in the Year of the Dragon. With a renewed focus on personal connections and mutual respect, the two nations appear poised to enter a new era of strengthened ties.
