Palau, who has been a close ally of Japan, had asked its people to support a fundraiser intended to help the people of Southwestern Japan who had been affected by the recent flood that took more than 190 lives.
The Office of the President announced that the emergency fundraiser will be conducted today, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ministry of Education (MOE) parking lot in Medalaii, Koror.
“Please stop by to show your support for our friends in Japan during their time of need. We will be accepting monetary donations which will be sent to Japan to assist in crisis recovery efforts,” the statement from the Office of the President read.
The fundraiser is conducted by the Office of the President and the Palau Red Cross Society.
Meanwhile, President Tommy Remengesau, Jr., in a letter dated July 9 which was addressed to Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, has extended his sympathies and condolences to the people of Japan.
“The people and the Leadership of the Government of the Republic of Palau join you in mourning the many lives lost during this terrible tragedy. We hope that your people will quickly overcome and recover from the disasters of this tragic event. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your people,” the letter reads.
The downpour started on Thursday last week that caused flooding in some areas of Southwestern Japan over the weekend. Hundreds of thousands were reportedly forced to flee their homes while some took shelters on rooftops as water flooded the affected areas. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
