In an effort to promote a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal, President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. alongside the 193 state assembly of the United Nations co-sponsored the United Nations Olympic Truce Resolution. Upon a unanimous decision, the resolution was adopted on December 9th, 2019 setting the tone of peace for the upcoming 2020 Olympic Games that will be held in Tokyo, Japan.

In a letter of appreciation, President of International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach expressed his gratitude.

“Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for your government’s active support for the Olympic Games by co-sponsoring the UN Olympic Truce Resolution” the letter read.

In response via the Office of the President of Palau Facebook page, President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. expressed his thoughts.

“Palau was proud to co-sponsor this important resolution and actively support its goals of ensuring the safe passage, access and participation of athletes, officials, and all other participants taking part in the upcoming Games XXXII (32) Olympiad. You have my government’s commitment that Palau will strictly adhere to the principles of political neutrality and solidarity in relation to the upcoming Olympic Games.” Remengesau said.

Due to the commendable leadership and commitment from the International Olympic Committee towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, President Remengesau Jr. extended an invention to the IOC for the upcoming Ocean’s 2020 Conference this coming August.

Finally, through the help and support from the International Olympic Committee as well as other renowned international organizations and partners from around the world, Palau is committed to deliver a successful Ocean’s Conference. (Telbakes Yano)
