Palau Conservation Society (PCS) welcomed a new intern to its staff last week for Communications and Admin department.

Yvonne “Minnie” Markub will serve as the Communications and Admin Intern which is a new position at PCS.

Markub graduated from Mount Tahoma High School and Tacoma Community College where she earned her Associates of Liberal Arts degree in 2017.

Currently, Markub attends Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) and is studying social work in hopes of advocating for the implementation of social services for children, youth, and families in Palau.

Markub is one of the seven ‘Act Six’ scholars to PLU Cadre 10 and is receiving a full-need scholarship. She intends to pursue a Master’s of Social Work after graduating from PLU.

Markub’s role at PCS will focus on building a foundation for the new position. She will work with PCS staff to develop a social media strategy and provide broad support to the communications and administrative team.

With PCS’ 25th Anniversary approaching, Markub ‘s work will contribute to reaching PCS’ goal of outreaching to all of Palau’s population in 2019.

Markub started by supporting a full-day workshop focused on Results Based Management on her first day.

Later in her first week, she engaged in field work in Peleliu at the newly named MVP Forest of Hope.

“Although conservation may seem and sound totally different from social work, as social workers we must see it through an intersectional lens of how environmental justice is very well connected to the clients we serve in our communities, such as access to clean water.” Markub said.

Markub is a “proud daughter” of Manasseh and Kathy Temol. She was born and raised in Ikelau, Koror.

After her educational career, Markub plans to return to Palau and join the workforce to contribute as a Palauan community member and to be more involved in her parents’ and family’s lives. (PR)
