KOROR, Palau (Oct. 1, 2024) — President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. has proclaimed October 2024 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of awareness, early detection, and prevention of breast cancer in the Republic of Palau.
In his proclamation, Whipps highlighted that breast cancer remains the leading cancer among women in Palau and is among the top three cancers affecting the population. The proclamation addresses significant contributing factors to cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including tobacco and alcohol abuse, poor eating habits, and physical inactivity.
According to the 2007-2021 Pacific Regional Central Cancer Registry, tobacco-related cancers account for 57% of adult cancers, while obesity-related cancers make up 23%. The report also indicates that 29% of adult cancers, such as cervical and breast cancers, have evidence-based screening tests available. Early diagnosis and treatment can be critical, as 58% of those diagnosed with cancer die within five years.
The president’s proclamation encourages community members to recognize and support breast cancer survivors and those currently battling the disease. He applauded the efforts of medical professionals and community members working diligently to mitigate the burden of cancer.
In keeping with tradition, the proclamation calls for a collective effort to honor those affected by breast cancer and to promote awareness that can lead to improved early detection measures. The theme for this year’s observance is “No one should face breast cancer alone,” urging all citizens to participate in activities aimed at combating breast cancer.
Whipps called upon all stakeholders to unite as a community in the fight against breast cancer and to educate citizens about screening, detection, and risk factors throughout the month of October.
This declaration comes at a crucial time as the Republic of Palau continues to address health challenges posed by cancer and strives to enhance public awareness and education around preventative measures. (By: L.N. Reklai)
