Former President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr. is eligible to run again for the Office of the President, according to a legal opinion from the Attorney General provided to the Palau Election Commission (PEC).

The clarification came in response to a letter from Senator Rukebai Inabo dated July 30, 2024, in which she requested the PEC to disqualify Remengesau’s candidacy. In her letter, Senator Inabo argued that Remengesau’s nomination violated Article VIII, Section 4 of Palau’s Constitution, which bars a president from seeking office after two consecutive terms.

However, PEC Chairman Bisayang “Ush” Luii stated that the Attorney General’s opinion confirmed that “Former President Remengesau is not barred by Article VIII, Section 4 from serving further terms as the President of the Republic of Palau.”
