KOROR, Palau — Palau has announced the official schedule of events for its 2025 Independence Day celebrations, with organizers confirming that the popular boat race will go ahead despite major funding challenges.
“The Independence Day Boat Race will take place on Sunday, September 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both Koror and Airai sides,” said Jennifer Sugiyama of the Boaters Association. She noted that this year’s race was nearly canceled after the previous coordinator stepped down unexpectedly, leaving organizers scrambling to secure financial support.
Confirmed sponsors include Eurasia Pacific Incorporated, Palau Pacific Resort, WCC, Speaker Gibson Kanai, Representative Abel and other members of the House of Delegates. Additional support has been provided by Surnagel & Sons Company, Koror State Government, the Ministry of Justice’s Marine Law Division and Palau Shipping.
Due to tight funding, prize amounts have been reduced with the agreement of participants. Organizers said prize money will come from leftover funds from last year, new sponsor contributions and donations collected ahead of the event. The final prize list will be announced after the race.
Sugiyama said organizers hope to secure more stable funding in the future, noting the race’s role as a major attraction that draws visitors from Guam, Saipan and beyond.
