A full week of activities has been organized to celebrate Palau’s 30th Independence Day on October 1, with various events highlighting the nation’s culture, sports, and maritime heritage.

The festivities begin on September 25 with the Palau Leadership Softball Tournament at the Nippon Baseball Field (Asahi Ballfield) in Ngerbeched, Koror.

On September 28, the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner will officially open its new headquarters at the Palau Royal Resort. This event marks the inauguration of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner’s base in Palau.

September 29 will feature a series of major events. The 1st Annual Independence Day Cycling Race, organized by the Belau Triathlon Federation, will take place at the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge. Starting at 5:30 a.m. from the Airai side of the bridge, the race will follow a route through Babeldaob and back, aiming to promote cycling and sports tourism in Palau.

Also on September 29, the Palau Sailing Association will host the 1st Palau Cup for young sailors, celebrating the next generation’s sailing skills and honoring Palau’s rich maritime traditions.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture & Environment (MAFE) will host a World Food Day celebration, showcasing Palauan traditional dishes and crops. The event, starting at 10 a.m. at the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge, highlights the nation’s culinary heritage as part of the Independence Day festivities.

Adding to the busy schedule on September 29, the Palau Visitors Authority will hold a special Market Day, dubbed “Boat Race Day – Market,” at the Airai side of the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge. This market will feature local foods and products, drawing crowds to the area.

The annual boat race, a much-anticipated highlight of the Independence Day celebrations, will also take place on September 29, on the Koror side of the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge, commonly known as KB Bridge.

These seven events, five of which occur on September 29, will lead up to the main Independence Day celebrations on October 1.

On September 30, the 31st Mechesil Belau Conference will convene at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center in Madalaii, Koror, while the Independence Day and Olechotel Belau Fair Music Jam Festival will be held at Ernguul Park.

The grand Independence Day celebration on October 1 will take place in Palau’s capital, Ngerulmud, featuring the 24th Olechotel Belau Fair. The event will showcase Palau’s cultural heritage with traditional games and the unveiling of two commemorative stamps. One stamp will feature Elizabeth Kraemer-Bannow’s depiction of Palauan life during the German Colonial Period (1899–1914), while the other will honor Palau’s key allies—the U.S., Australia, Japan, and Taiwan—on this milestone occasion.

Additional activities on October 1 include the “Create a Palau” art show, hosted by D.A.V.E., and a Youth Dialogue Event organized by Reng Collective.

The celebrations will conclude with a fireworks display at 7 p.m. in Ngerulmud, Melekeok, marking the official end of Palau’s 30th Independence Day festivities.
