In celebration of Ocean Day, this past Night Market on October 26th was themed as “Palau Ocean Night Market”— hosted by Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS).
The lively yet mellifluous band entertainment performing was brought to you by MVCE. During the latter half of the night, Ngchesar War dancers kept the crowd engaged and brimming with excitement with their traditional war dance performance.
Following the Ngchesar War dancers were two more dance groups, Meketii dancers and Ngermid dancers, performing contemporary Palauan dances that captivated the flood of people at Ernguul Central Park. And, as a token of appreciation for Ngermid dancers’ memorable performance and in celebration of WWFM 89.5 22nd Anniversary and Koror State Government’s 35th Constitutional Day, Mr. Alfonso Diaz, CEO of Diaz Broadcasting Company, presented $1,000 as “sengk” to the Ngermid dancers.
Meanwhile, off the stage, we had Glass Beads demonstration by Sylvia Kloulubak, Weaving demonstration by Judy Kebekol, and Wood Carving demonstration by Maximo Marcello showing visitors a glance into Palauan culture. With all the great entertainment, food and other products offered by 22 vendors, a total of 1,973 people stopped by this Palau Ocean Night Market. Of the 1,973 people, 348 were tourists and 1,625 were locals while total sales reported amounted to $8,073.25.
During the Night Market, representatives of Koror State Government’s Solid Waste Management Office were present to raise awareness of proper disposal of trash and also their Redeemable program. Attendees were encouraged to bring their redeemable waste and learn how to properly dispose their waste.
Another activity of the night was the awarding of winners of the Ocean Day Art Contest hosted by PNMS. All elementary schools were invited to participate in an art contest in celebration of Ocean Day, creating artwork with the theme “Healthy Oceans.” They were judged on visual impact, interpretation of the theme and creativity, composition and design, and craftsmanship. There were two categories: Kindergarten to 4th grade, and 5th to 8th grade. Prizes awarded to these young and talented winners were sponsored by our local scuba diving and eco-adventure company, Sam’s Tours! Here are the winners:
