WHEN: MONDAY 18 DECEMBER, 5PM FOR 5.30PM START
WHERE: PALAU NATIONAL GYM
Palau National Gym will host the Palauan Premiere of Deep Rising, Jason Momoa’s new film about the threat of deep seabed mining in the Pacific on Monday 18 December. The screening will be free for everyone to attend and will include a Q&A with President Surangel Whipps, Jr. and the film’s Director, Matthieu Rytz.
The film is narrated, and executive produced by Jason Momoa, who, having grown up in Hawaii, immediately resonated with the film’s message for environmental protection and regeneration. He also connected deeply with Matthieu Rytz, the film’s creator, and they collaborated closely to give a voice to the unseen depths of our ocean. Jason Momoa stated, “It’s the most impactful film I’ve ever done.”
Palau was the first country in the world to stand up against deep seabed mining in international waters and Palau’s Government and traditional leaders have been very vocal about the need for rigorous independent science to be conducted to fully understand the environmental consequences of mining the seafloor.
Many nations have since joined Palau in the call for a moratorium on deep seabed mining in international waters, but the threat is still very real with mining companies incorrectly arguing that the world needs more of the rare earth minerals found in the deep seabed for battery production to transition to green energy.
The film uncovers the large-scale plan by mining companies to mine the seabed in the Pacific Ocean. The proposed area of ocean lies off the coast of Hawaii and is larger than Europe. If mining goes ahead in this area, it could cause catastrophic environmental and cultural consequences for Pacific Island States.
Under UN law, the seafloor outside national jurisdiction is designated as “the common heritage of humankind… to be held in trust for future generations”, meaning that it belongs to person on the planet and to future generations. We should all have a say in its fate.
Deep Rising follows this challenging story and ultimately, plants seed of hope and inspiration by making clear that a green energy revolution is still within our reach if we’re willing to move to a truly regenerative and abundant energy sources. But first the world needs to know what’s going on behind closed doors.
