Palau has signed agreements with the Philippines and Vietnam to strengthen cooperation in fisheries. These Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aim to support sustainable fishing, improve technology, and encourage trade.
What the Agreements Cover
Palau-Vietnam Fisheries Agreement
Palau and Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have agreed to work together in several areas:
- Fishing Investments: Businesses from both countries may partner in fishing activities.
- Aquaculture Technology: Sharing knowledge on fish farming.
- Data Sharing: Exchanging information about fisheries laws and management.
- Fighting Illegal Fishing: Both countries will work together to prevent unregulated fishing and set up a hotline for reporting issues.
- Joint Committee: A team will be formed to oversee the agreement and meet at least once a year.
The agreement lasts for five years and will automatically renew unless one side decides to end it six months before expiration.
Palau-Philippines Fisheries Agreement
The agreement with the Philippines’ Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) focuses on:
- Fishing Opportunities: Encouraging sustainable fishing while following local laws.
- Aquaculture and Infrastructure: Developing fish farming and related facilities.
- International Standards: Ensuring fish exports meet global safety and trade rules.
- Illegal Fishing Prevention: Strengthening measures to stop unregulated fishing.
- Training Programs: Helping small-scale fishers through education and technology sharing.
- Joint Fisheries Management: A special committee will oversee projects and cooperation efforts.
This agreement is also valid for five years, with options for renewal and changes.
Why These Agreements Matter
These partnerships help Palau manage its fisheries responsibly while boosting trade and investment. By working with Vietnam and the Philippines, Palau hopes to improve fishing practices, protect its marine resources, and support local fishers.
