Vice President and Justice Minister Raynold Oilouch is in Geneva to represent Palau in the International Organization for Migration (IOM) sessions and for its 2nd Special Council slated this June 29 at the Conference Room 1 of the Centre International de Conferences in Geneva where Palau’s application for membership will be voted on.
IOM, which was established in 1951, is an inter-governmental organization “in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.”
Based on the IOM website, IOM currently has 169 member states and it promotes “humane and orderly migration…by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.”
Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Nauru are among the member states of IOM in Micronesia.
In a statement furnished by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) to Island Times, it was stated that the IOM shouldered the entire cost of the travel to Geneva.
“IOM has helped the ministry a lot already including provision of training for Human Trafficking, and we believe we’ll get many support from them,” the statement reads.
In our previous report, MOJ had previously partnered with IOM last April in conducting a training and workshop to address human trafficking cases in Palau. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
