After the exciting conclusion of the 2025 Pacific Mini Games, Palau’s track and field venue officially opened its gates to the public on July 21, 2025. While the reopening was eagerly anticipated by local athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike, it came with a notable change that caught many visitors by surprise — a new entry fee policy.
For the first time, Palau Athletics officials introduced a fee of $1.00 per person to access the track and field facility. This new rule marks a departure from previous practice, where regular morning visitors and athletes were able to use the venue free of charge. The $1 fee applies to all visitors regardless of the time of day and is unique across Palau’s sports venues, as no other facility has implemented a similar charge.
Charlie Ellis, one of the officials managing the track and field, shared his observations on how the policy impacted the local community. “In the mornings, the number of people who would come to the track is usually less than ten, but sometimes 20,” Ellis explained. “When the fee was first introduced, some visitors came but didn’t want to pay — they’d just turn around and leave.” This initial resistance, however, has diminished over time as visitors gradually became accustomed to the change.
Ellis added, “Now it isn’t a big deal. Most people are fine with the rules and policy, and many even appreciate the improvements that the fee helps fund.” The collection of the fee is intended to support the maintenance and enhancement of the track and field facilities, ensuring that the venue remains a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment for all users.
Despite the change, the track and field remains a popular spot for both casual joggers and serious athletes. The decision to implement a nominal fee aims to balance affordability with the need for sustainable funding for the ongoing upkeep of the facility.
As Palau continues to promote sports and healthy living among its residents, officials hope that the community will continue to support the track and field venue. With the positive response following the initial adjustment period, the $1 entry fee is now seen not just as a cost, but as an investment in better sporting infrastructure for everyone’s benefit.
