Ngatpang, Palau (Dec. 18, 2023) – Palauan residents in Ngatpang State celebrated smoother commutes and a brighter future after Taiwan poured millions into infrastructure projects. The island nation witnessed the completion and groundbreaking of five construction initiatives, including road resurfacing and a gleaming new basketball court for Ibobang High School, all courtesy of Taiwan’s Economy Stimulus Grant.
President Surangel Whipps and Taiwanese Ambassador Jessica Lee headlined the festivities, joined by local dignitaries and excited students. Lee emphasized the practical benefits of road upgrades, reducing maintenance costs and boosting safety for villagers and schoolkids. She further commended Belau Modekngei High School’s efforts to preserve Palauan heritage through education, echoing the theme of “true partnership” between the two nations.
Taiwan’s largesse extended beyond Ngatpang’s asphalt arteries. Lee announced a 100-ton rice donation, a $930,000 lifeline for Belau National Hospital refurbishment, and a $1.55 million boost for Palau’s tourism and professional training initiatives. She also expressed gratitude for President Whipps’ unwavering support for Taiwan’s participation in the recent UNFCCC COP28 summit.
Whipps reciprocated the warm sentiments, lauding Taiwan as a “friend in need” and highlighting their collaboration on green energy projects like solar panel installations at government buildings. He underscored the “rock-solid” Palau-Taiwanese bond, forged through mutual respect and practical assistance.
With Christmas cheer in the air, the ceremony underscored the deep ties between the two nations. As Palau navigates development challenges, Taiwan’s commitment to infrastructure upgrades and broader economic support positions it as a key player in the island nation’s future.
