Palau has called for the inclusion of Taiwan in the United Nations annual climate change conference.

President Surangel Whipps Jr. in his COP28 National Statement in Dubai that climate change “should not discriminate” and that everyone’s participation is needed, including Taiwan.

“Mr. President, climate change does not discriminate, and neither should we. The Republic of China — Taiwan has pushed to help address climate change mitigation and adaptation, inviting Pacific islands and like-minded countries to work together,” Whipps said.

The solution to the climate crisis requires everyone’s participation, including the 23 million people of Taiwan and the thousands of businesses. Taiwan must be allowed to participate in UNFCCC processes and share their expertise, “ he added

Taiwan, he said can help with the country already providing direct financing to work with communities to build sea walls, shelters, and infrastructure to move to higher ground.

Whipps said Taiwan has cultivated an environmentally conscious culture, which has led to private sector partners.

Palau is one of the 13 countries with diplomatic ties to Taiwan.
