Vancouver, WA – Hans Ileakl Ongelungel, a prominent Palauan artist and advocate for Pacific decolonization, passed away on July 5, 2025, at the age of 68. According to her daughter Merirei Ongrung’s social media post, his peaceful passing followed a “heart failure after a courageous journey with cancer and dementia”.
Born in Ngerbau, Ngerchelong, and raised in Ngerubesang, Melekeok, Hans was known for his vibrant, color-rich paintings depicting Palauan life and landscapes, a notable achievement given his color blindness.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Mr. Ongelungel was a vocal advocate for Palauan self-determination. In 1988, he notably addressed the 55th Trusteeship Council Meeting of the United Nations, speaking out against the colonization and militarization of the Pacific.
Mr. Ongelungel pursued higher education in the United States, attending colleges in Twin Falls and Lewiston, Idaho, and later moving to Portland, Oregon. In 2013, he moved to Vancouver, Washington, where he resided till 2024 continuing his painting.
According to his daughter Merirei, “By spring 2024, Hans began showing signs of fast-progressing dementia. As Hans had no sons to assist with his care, his daughters made the difficult decision to transition him into a nearby long-term care facility, where he spent his final year painting, playing bingo, socializing, and engaging in the facility’s gossip, much to the amusement and delight of the nursing staff”.
He is survived by his daughters, Sha Merirei and Lilian Dirrebes, and his wife, Hannah (Née Rebluud).
In accordance with his wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A casual celebration of life is planned for July 26. (By: Eoghan Olkeriil Ngirudelsang)
